Based on the proportions of Thoreau’s cabin but at half scale: 7.5’ x 5’ x 9’ h and built from scavenged materials (pallet wood and rough mill wood). It was flatpack built, so is easily and quickly dis- and reassembled. The cabin will sit on wheels, so it can be moved around to different vistas on the DeCordova site or rotated towards different viewsheds during the day. Inside there are stools and modular movable shelving, boxes, and tables, which can be altered for group discussions, solo work, or casual stopping by.
Things people have used the Field Station for: looking at birds, eating lunch, making ink from plants, nursing a baby, resting, conversation, shade from the sun, graffiti, learning about leaf out, flying a balloon, leaving gifts….
